Bubbles, our little baby opossum girl, arrived at Rescue Center Costa Rica at the beginning of August. Unfortunately, her mother was killed by a dog and she was left as an orphan. At the time of her arrival, she was 8 weeks old, weighed only 25 grams, and could not open her eyes to see the world.
Opossums are marsupials and they don’t leave the mother’s pouch until at least 10 weeks old. You can imagine the stress she endured during this difficult time. The veterinarian team was extremely worried regarding her condition. They were scared she would not remain alive.
They were very creative and bottle-fed her special droplets of milk every 2-3 hours day and night to mimic nipple feeding. We are happy to say after all the hard work she made it and is a healthy and happy current member of the Rescue Center Costa Rica family.
It’s the hard work, time, and effort that often goes unrecognized by the tireless vets who do a wonderful job. We are very proud of them (especially Lilla) who made a huge effort in caring for this baby.
Bubbles received her name because every time she was fed, she formed bubbles in her mouth. We receive many opossums throughout the year so the new opossum enclosure should be filled with plenty of friends for Bubbles very soon.
