Our Story

Vanessa Lizano's deep commitment to protecting sea turtles led her to Moín Beach in Limón, Costa Rica, where she worked tirelessly to safeguard turtle nests from illegal poaching. In 2013, her close friend and fellow conservationist, Jairo Mora Sandoval, tragically lost his life while on a nighttime patrol. This devastating event highlighted the escalating dangers faced by environmentalists in the region.

In the aftermath of Jairo's death, Vanessa continued her conservation efforts, but the challenges intensified. The expansion of the Port of Limón introduced additional obstacles, including increased human activity and development that disrupted turtle nesting sites. These combined factors made it more difficult for volunteers to protect the eggs and strained the momentum of conservation initiatives.

In 2020, with the unwavering support of her sister Laura, Vanessa reignited her mission by founding a new wildlife rescue center. This new beginning allowed them to create a safe and ethical space for animals to heal and return to the wild, while also educating the public on conservation and responsible tourism.

Today, the center is led by a passionate team of individuals who bring their expertise and dedication to every aspect of wildlife care. Each member plays a crucial role in ensuring that animals receive the best possible treatment and that the sanctuary’s mission continues to grow.

Rescue Center Costa Rica operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing injured or displaced wildlife. The center relies on the support of volunteers and donors to sustain its operations. It has received official permits from Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) to function as an Animal Rescue Center and sanctuary.
